Beginner, Calligraphy, Linda Guiry, W&N, Winsor & Newton -

You can view the full range of available Winsor & Newton Calligraphy Inks Here. I was really excited to start using and exploring the Winsor & Newton Complete Calligraphy Set for beginners. It comes with 5 nibs, a nib holder and 3 different coloured inks - Deep Red, Gold and Black - and good calligraphy paper. If you are new to calligraphy using a dip pen will be challenging, but it is the most authentic experience you can get in the art of calligraphy. Like any new skill, it takes practice to learn new techniques and to build muscle memory....

Coloured Pencils, Koh-I-Noor, Mondeluz, Natasha Fitzpatrick, Watercolour Pencils -

Christmas has come early for me yet again, thanks to the wonderful team at Art Supplies NZ who have kindly sent me a new set of these Mondeluz Coloured pencils to try out. The case is wrapped in a card casing that to me resembles an artisan box of chocolates rather than a box of coloured pencils. Intrigued, as I have yet to try this brand, I go forth and open the box, being very careful not to damage the card casing. The pencils are encased in a beautiful metal tin. What strikes me first is the great colour range,...

How To, Jan Thomson, Maimeri, Ox Gall, Water Colour Paint -

If you’re a watercolour painter you will probably have heard of Ox Gall. This is a slightly unpleasant smelling liquid extracted from the liver of cattle that has been used for many years to achieve “smoother” effects with watercolour paint. It is basically a wetting agent, meaning that the paper will take the paint more readily. Paper which is heavily sized almost repels the paint so that it sometimes beads. Ox Gall will allow the watercolour to be absorbed, making blending much simpler. So, here goes my trial of Maimeri Ox Gall… On the left is a test patch painted...

Jan Thomson, Maimeri, Paint, Red, Water Colour Paint -

With Armistice Day next Sunday this seems like a good week to paint poppies. Most of the poppies in my garden are red, pink and orange, so this gave me a chance to try out Maimeri Blu warm pigments! The colours which I’ve used in this little painting are: Rosso Primario Magenta, Rosso Pyrollo, Giallo Primario, Giallo Transparente and Blu Oltremare. I began with a wet in wet wash, dropping in my cooler reds towards the top to push those flowers back a little, then adding the warmer reds and oranges nearer the foreground. Yellows were dropped in, too, being...

Atelier, Mediums -

Atelier have just launched some new mediums, and today I’ve been trialing two of them – Atelier Thin Medium and Atelier Middle Medium. I enjoy painting on primed hardboard, but sometimes acrylic paint can be a bit “draggy” on this surface – so I decided to use the Thin medium first to do an underwash which I wanted to be quite liquid. At first I used it on my palette mixed with the paint but wasn’t very happy with that so I put it into a small spray bottle and that was great, I could either spray onto the paint...
